Glass artist Sisir Sahana exhibits new glass sculptures that use discarded material like roots, flowers, shells, broken glass etc to speak of humans connect with earth in her solo show ‘A dialogue with soil’. Fifty-six-year-old Sahana is showing 12 new sculptures that were made in a residency program at Pittsburgh Glass Centre, USA this year. He teaches as a professor of Ceramics & Glass at the Department of Design in Kala-Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan.
This show is about frozen time, about our roots, about our connection with nature. Sahana has been working with a similar concept for a long time in both paintings and sculptures. He discovers past through present time. His recent works are based on archival metaphors that are discovered through digging various layers. For creating these layers, he works through various treatments of glass. He does not care for the traditional notion of making glass a sophisticated, polished and transparent material. Incorporating thrown away broken pieces of glass objects by other artists, and other discarded material like roots, seeds, flowers, leaves, shells, animal remains etc, he recreates with recycled material.
