While Salvador Dalí was born in Catalonia, Spain and developed close relationships with artists working in Paris during the late 1920s, it was his first trip to United States in 1934 that sparked a special “home away from home” bond that would last for the rest of his life. But who exactly was this elusive Surrealist artist and why was there a reciprocal fascination between him and the New World? This is the story of Dalí, and his collaborations in the American film, fashion, and art worlds that made him one of the most intriguing overseas artists in U.S. history.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the life and legacy of Salvador Dalí, one of the most well known Surrealist artists in America whose paintings still dazzle audiences with their phantasmic photorealist liquid imagery.

Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this digital showcase of Dalí and his art, with a focus on his time, relationships, and projects in America, will include:

  • A brief overview of Dalí’s early years, including his close ties with the Surrealists in Paris and how he found Gala, the love of his life
  • Highlights of Dalí’s visits to New York, including his first connections with the art scene in the city to his home away from home at the St Regis
  • A look at the artist’s involvement in the fashion world, including his window designs for Bonwitt Teller and other ventures
  • discussion of Dalí’s American friendships and collaborations, from the Marx Brothers, to Walt Disney, to Alfred Hitchcock
  • American Surrealist photography of Dalí by photographers Weegee and Philippe Halsman
  • Dali’s design for the Surrealist Pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows
  • Andy Warhol and Dalí’s Pop Art connections such as fusing the creative energies of Surrealism, marketing, filmmaking, and even religion
  • Dalí’s masterpieces in U.S. art museums, including the Morse collection in St Petersburg, Florida

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about Salvador Dalí are welcomed and encouraged!
