Artist Seema Kohli is back in her avatar of a sculptor. This November marks for the first time a large show of sculptural work from Kohli titled “A Circle of Our Own”. Kohli has always amassed an impressive oeuvre over the years, working across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and performance. This time, she presents a body of sandstone and bronze sculptures in the historic setting of Sunder Nursery. Building on her previous work in which she channels the divine feminine, Kohli has imagined a space to celebrate the legacy of Indic female deities revered collectively in temples from the 8th to the 12th Century CE. The present work has been developed over years of the artist’s meditations within ancient Yogini temples, and extensive research into their plural histories. This circle of sixty-four yogini sandstone sculptures and zinc plates is accompanied by five alluring sculptures in wood and bronze, manifesting the irrepressible bond between the feminine and the natural. The opening evening will also showcase a narrative performance by the artist, accompanied by new video works. The enchanting landscape of Sunder Nursery, bringing together the majesty of Mughal architecture with verdant vistas, is perfect for a show deeply rooted in a reconnection with our innate, tellurian energies.
