ACF Spotlight: Introducing Inayat Malik – Fragments, Memory, and the Art of In-Between

ACF Artist of the Month

By – Chahat Sharma

Art Culture Festival (ACF) is proud to introduce Artist of the Month, a new initiative dedicated to spotlighting emerging artists who are shaping contemporary practice today. Each month, we will feature a promising voice from across disciplines, offering in-depth editorial coverage that explores their work, ideas, process and evolving artistic journey. Through this platform, ACF aims to create meaningful visibility for early-career artists and foster a deeper engagement with the practices defining the future of contemporary art.

For our very first spotlight, we are delighted to present Inayat Malik, a young artist whose work exists beautifully in the spaces between memory, material and meaning.

The Language of the “In-Between”

Inayat’s work is not about clear definitions, it is about the spaces in between. Between past and present, personal and inherited histories, the ordinary and the abstract.

Her practice is rooted in an intuitive exploration of these intersections. Through collage, layering and material play, she constructs visual narratives that feel both intimate and expansive. Drawing from family archives, photographs and found materials, she creates works that are not just compositions, but living fragments of memory.

As she describes it, her work emerges from observing her surroundings and noticing textures, collecting overlooked objects, while allowing meaning to unfold organically.

Material as Memory

What sets Inayat’s practice apart is her sensitivity to material. Paper, photographs, textures, each element carries its own history. These are not just aesthetic choices, but repositories of memory and emotion.

Her collages become spaces where timelines collapse and reassemble. Family archives meet contemporary imagery. Personal narratives intersect with broader cultural histories. The result is work that feels layered both visually and conceptually.

Her process is fluid and intuitive:

  • She begins by collecting images, textures, fragments of daily life.
  • Moves into assembling and layering.
  • And allows meaning to emerge rather than dictate it.

This openness creates works that invite viewers to engage, interpret and reflect.

A Practice Rooted in Observation

Based in New Delhi, Inayat Malik graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art, London in 2024. Her artistic journey has already taken her across cities like Barcelona and Paris, where she developed site-responsive works engaging with urban textures and environments.

Her growing presence in the art world includes:

  • Representation by a New Delhi gallery
  • Exhibitions at India Art Fair
  • Features in Vogue India

Yet, what remains constant is her commitment to everyday observation and finding depth in the mundane, transforming it into something quietly powerful.

In a time where identity is constantly shifting and being renegotiated, Inayat’s work feels especially relevant. She reminds us that identity is not fixed, it is layered, evolving and shaped by both memory and moment.

Her work does not offer answers. Instead, it creates space for questions:

  • What do we inherit?
  • What do we carry forward?
  • And how do fragments of the past shape who we are becoming?
